Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
RODEO sur Seine
by Georgina Oliver

Who’s to blame? Woody, the cute cowboy in hit kiddy movie “Toy Story 2”? In the final gallop toward “Paris in the spring,” everything from clothing to cuisine and music is kinda Western. Even nightclubbers are hooked. A hunky Texan called Wade hosts monthly DJ 'n' rodeo soirées at L’Etoile on rue de Presbourg (tel: 01.45.00.78.70). Cowgirls qualify for a free cocktail. And everybody gets a fuming portion of beans. While the uncontested star of the evening is an untenable taureau mécanique.

Rodeo Girl

An exhibition at over-cool concept store Colette is a surefire sign that a look is “wanted” by the sheriffs of Parisian chic. And that darlin’ is exactly what Wyoming-born photojournalist Lisa Eisner is getting till April 1. A former Vogue fashion editor, she has published a book titled “Rodeo Girl” (Greybull Press) which constitutes an insider look at the rodeo queen scene. Also on the menu: Finir Cowgirl, a display of upgraded Western apparel by designers like Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui. Fringed leather pants and jackets. Studded vintage jeans with sequins. Plus checkered shirts by Comme des Garçons. (213, rue St-Honoré, 1er, tel: 01.55.35.33.90.)

Style Posse

The usual suspects are on the rodeo jeans trail. The latest issue of elite fashion mag Visionaire is a Levi's special.

Ben Harper

Gig of the month? Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. At Bercy stadium March 22. With an extra concert in April. The très Far West booklet inside Harper’s “Burn To Shine” album exudes frontierland angst (Virgin Records America Inc).

Last American Virgin

Also in town: Last American Virgin. Headed by sassy Western chanteuse Shea, this “born to shine” country/rock/blues band hits the Chesterfield Café Mar 7-18. (124, rue la Boétie, 8e, tel: 01.42.25.18.06.)

Alternative Country

Meanwhile back at the ranch... The Smells Like Records label has rekindled Lee (“These boots are made for walking”) Hazlewood’s career with a series of reeditions promoted here by PIAS France. While a Nashville-based indie outfit named Curb has released two CDs aimed at urban cowboys: an “Alternative Country” compilation and Hank Williams III’s “Risin’ Outlaw.” And Universal has 50 “Hot Country” albums up its sleeve from Dolly Parton to The Mavericks.

Cowboy Dream

Where to shop for le style Western? Yer best bet is Cowboy Dream. This general store specializes in saloon get-ups guaranteed to create a stir in Paris’ chichi salons. Wary of fads like faux cowhide and “feathers seen in all the fashion parades,” the headman stocks sturdy stuff: “a few feathers for those who come looking for that, but basically the genuine article.” (16, rue de Turbigo, 3e, tel: 01.42.21.49.33.)

Stetson Style

What if Madeleine Albright’s wide-brimmed headgear had triggered the trend? Cowboy Dream sells Stetson’s Lite Felt and U-Shape-It lines. And, in a recent défilé, Marc Jacobs featured a ten-gallon hat by Patricia Underwood, currently showcased chez Colette.

Diesel Campaign

Titled “Joanna World Tour 2000,” cutting-edge Italian jeans label Diesel’s latest tabloid press-inspired ad campaign features a fictitious country-rockstar sporting a cowboy hat. Diesel’s Les Halles boutique? 26, rue de Reynie, 1er, tel: 01.40.26.73.85. Website: Joannafanclub.com

Chicago Meatpackers

Where to eat like a Texan, in Paris? By all accounts, Chicago Meatpackers is great. “The steaks are charred just right. Not greasy.” ( 8, rue Coquillière, 1er, tel: 01.40.28.02.33.)

Enchiladas Elegantes

While the Buffalo Grill chain is wildly popular with meat eaters and their families, it’s harder for vegetarians to strike the gunslinging macho pose... So, veggie-friendly Tex-Mex restos are a bonanza. Among these: Café Pacifico. The French market ain’t ready for Linda McCartney’s New Age menus, but this 15th arrondissement cantina does quebradillas and nachos rancheros that keep everybody happy. (50, bd du Montparnasse, tel: 01.45.48.63.87.)

Wild West Show

The incarnation of Rodeo sur Seine? Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show at Disneyland Paris is a high energy replica of the bare back riding demonstrations which William Frederick Cody performed before French audiences at the turn of the 19th century. Screaming. Yelling. Chuck wagons. Cowboys and Native Americans. Longhorn cows from Texas, buffalos... Face painting. Shooting contests. A camp fire dinner. Flags. Free cowboy hats... (6:30pm & 9:30pm, Disney Village, Marne-la-Vallée, RER Chessy, 325F including unlimited beer or Coke, reduced rate for kids. Reservations info: 01.60.45.70.13.)

Spring Chorus

Each spring, a mega good value fest backed by France’s SACEM music rights organization turns Paris’ western outskirts into a springboard for young talent. A mix of chanson, urban sound and contests like Starting Rock, Chorus! des Hauts-de-Seine’s program surfs from Juliette Greco (Asnières, Mar 10) to Patricia Kaas (Colombes, Mar 23), from Brigitte Fontaine (Bagneux, Mar 25) to Thomas Fersen (Vanves, Mar 18), from Paris Combo (Levallois, Mar 24) to Les Joyeux Urbains (Nanterre, Mar 9.) Bookings: CNIT, 01.47.74.51.11.

Starck After-Shows

Now in London, in New York next... A traveling exhibition launched at The Conran Shop in Paris last month paid tribute to design guru Philippe Starck, recently elected Créateur Culte of the millennium. To April 30, at Espace Landowki (28, av André Morizet, 92100 Boulogne-Billancourt, tel: 01.55.18.53.70, M° Marcel Sembat), a fun display titled Design 2000 Petits enfants de Starck spotlights his potential successors: Beef, Bertillot & Valette, Matali Crasset, Patrick Jouin, Jean-Marie Massaud.

Holland & Holland

A DJ soirée at the Madélios menswear store (23, bd de la Madeleine, 1er, tel: 01.53.45.00.00) introduced the millennium suit designed by José Lévy, who has been appointed artistic director of London hunting, shooting and fishing specialist Holland & Holland. The venue, Café Madélios, is among the most stylish bar/restos in town. On the menu? Ultra light world food. And on the way out... Anne Sémonin’s male beauty counter which offers signature treatments such as an anti-jet lag massage.
