ART

Keith Haring, "Made in France." An exhibition of over 60 works of art based on themes of dance, music, nature, sex, life and death. Through Sept 22, closed Tue, Musée Maillol: Foundation Dina Vierny, 59-61, rue de Grenelle, 7e, METRO: Rue du Bac, tel: 01.42.22.59.58.

"Hommage à Jean Marais: héro romantique d'aujourd'hui." An artistic tribute to one of the most romantic French film stars includes paintings and drawings by Jean Marais, Jean Cocteau and Christian Bérard; photography by Brassaï, Robert Corbeau, Dora Maar, le Studio Harcourt and others; old movie posters, costumes and personal memorabilia. Over his 60-year career, Marais excelled as an actor, singer, writer, painter, sculptor, architect, interior decorator, military soldier and most notably, Jean Cocteau's muse. This famous poet wrote several plays for Marais which eventually became screenplays such as "Beauty and the Beast." Benjamin Lévesque, "Vicious Game." Lévesque's third solo exhibition of paintings is less tangible than his past series  night and the City  and deals with aspects of remembrance and introspection. Many of his canvasses take the form of a passenger's reflections aboard a train as well as his actual reflection in the window and how it combines with the landscape. "Kaddish." An installation by Serge Lask displays a collage of book pages, scripts and scrolls rewritten in gouache and China ink calligraphy. To Sept 6, Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme, Hôtel de St-Aignan, 71, rue du Temple, 3e, METRO: Rambuteau, Hôtel de Ville, tel: 01.53.01.86.53.

"La Peinture après l'Abstraction, 1955-1975." The works of five post-abstract artists  Martin Barré, Jean Degottex, Raymond Hains, Simon Hantaï and Jacques Villeglé  are juxtaposed in this exhibition of over 100 experimental and unconventional �uvres. Similarities and differences in their works are grouped together in this tour of three decades of art. PHOTOGRAPHY

"The Promise of Photography: the DG Bank Collection." One of the largest private collections of photography  around 3,000 works by over 300 artists  is divided into three exhibition categories and put on display this summer. "Artists' photography" includes photographs by artists who weren't as well known for their photography, such as John Waters, Andy Warhol or Robert Rauschenberg. "Mythological Individuals" highlights the works of artists whose works became synonymous with the artists identity, such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Gilbert & George or Christian Boltanski. "Quelques traces du monde" consists of photo-documentarians like Dennis Adams, Nan Golden or Michael Schmidt. MUSIC

Liat Cohen in concert. This internationally-acclaimed guitar virtuoso plays classic works by Bach, Verdi and Rodrigo as well as a piece by Koshkin based on Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Fall of the House of Usher." SPECIAL EVENTS

"Paris Design 1999." "L'objet du design, 99 objets pour un siècle" is the theme of this year's design show at the Louvre. Alberto Alessi, Jacques Séguéla, Terence Conran, Jack Lang and Paolo Roversi are among the 99 artists invited to present the object they consider symbolic of design. A carte orange, i-mac, Dyson vaccuum cleaner, post-its, Barbie doll and Leatherman knife and other 20th century designs are on display. Documentary films on the history of design, work and "sitting down" explore the design element in everyday objects. "Cie Cahin Caha: chieNcrU." This Franco-American circus combines the formal French art of circus acting with the raw and innate American performance style. The result is a contemporary circus creation with rocking music and rolling routines. PARIS EN PLEIN AIR

"Paris quartier d'été 1999" is the city's summer festival of music, dance and theater. By keeping ticket prices low and performing in non-traditional venues, the festival reaches new audiences and adds a little variety to the routines of regular theater and concert-goers.

The festival kicks off on July 16 at 7pm with a cavaliers show by Fantasia in Tuileries. July 17, the Jardin des Tuileries is transformed into a Marrakesh marketplace with Les Enchanteurs du Maroc paying tribute to the city's Temps du Maroc celebration. Dancers, musicians, singers, acrobats, jugglers, fortune tellers and magicians begin performing at 7pm.

Free world music concerts are performed throughout the summer in Luxembourg Gardens. July 19-21, Tenores de Bitti (Sardinia); July 22-24, Ensemble Tartit (Sahara Desert); July 26-28, Jaïpur Kawa Brass Band (Indian fanfare); July 29-31, Tirana (Albania); Aug 2-4, Sorry Bamba et les Bobos du Mali (Western Africa); Aug 5-7, Toups Bebey and the Spirit Pan African Brass Company (African fanfare). All concerts begin at 6pm.

Dancers take over the courtyard at the Palais Royal. July 21-23, Karine Saporta presents "Phaëton," July 27-30, five dancers and 10 musicians from the Ballet des Iles de la Sonde perform "Le Royaume Oublié," a dance with masks, shadow theater and martial arts; Aug 3-5, the hip-hop group Käfig put on a dance Récital; Aug 9-12, an international troupe of 30 neo-classical ballet dancers grace the dance floor with Europe Dance. Performances begin at 10pm, tickets 100F/80F.

Artists from the association Mari-Mira set up shop in a cabin near the Canal de l'Ourcq and invites passersby to watch them at work. This waterside workspace becomes a garden gallery for contemporary sculpture, painting and other objets d'art. July 15 to Aug 14, 5-10pm, closed Sun, quai de la Seine, canal de l'Ourcq, free admission.

A series of free jazz and classical music concerts in Parisian parks includes a performance by l'Ensemble orchestral de Paris directed by Frédéric Lodéon in Luxembourg Gardens on July 15 at 6pm. The program features Handel's "Water Music," Braham's "Hungarian Dance" and overtures from the operas "The Barber of Seville" and "An Italian in Algiers." Didier Benetti directs l'Orchestre national de France in two free concerts at the Parc André Citroën. July 20 at 9pm, the orchestra is joined by 35 members of the Soweto Youth Choir. July 23 at 9pm, the musicians perform scores from famous films and operas. Jean Guillou, Yanka Hekimova, Ann-Dominique Merlet, Cecile Moreau and other world-renowned musicians perform organ and violin concerts in the Eglise St-Eustache, July 19 & 26 and Aug 2 & 9 at 8:30pm, 70F/50F.

The Jardin des Tuileries becomes an old vaudeville theater July 20 to Aug 14 as the Achille Tonic Cabaret presents Le Retour de Shirley et Dino, 9pm-10:30pm, every evening except Sun. The performances are followed by classic silent films set to music from 10:45-11:45pm. Dancing takes over the stage on weekend nights from 10:30pm to 12:30am for Le Bal Dingue. Tickets 140F/120F/60F.

Storytellers and singers perform at La Sorbonne, Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts and Schola Cantorum, July 19-31, 6pm, 70F/50F.

Place de Clichy becomes even more of a zoo when the Cirque Romanès takes over the Passage Lathuile from July 19  to Aug 14 at 8:30pm, 100F/50F.

Two theater productions enliven the Sorbier Square with drama, dinner and dancing. July 19-24, Tréteaux du Niger perform "Kasko," an adaptation of the play "Cid." July 27-31, the Volcan Bleu Theater presents "Hamlet sur la route," an adaptation of Hamlet by four comedians directed by Paul Golub. All performances start at 8:30pm, tickets 70F/50F.

One of the most unusual and imaginative highlights of Paris quartier d'été is Le Goût du Noir. This taste of the dark is no dinner by candlelight, but a dégustation led by a blind guide, Michel Reilhac. Diners can rediscover their four other senses through smelling, tasting, feeling and hearing course after course. July 21 to Aug 14, Wed-Sat, 7:30-9:30pm, Cerise building at Les Halles.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Bastille Day, July 14. This year's celebration begins on July 13 with a "bop" in the Jardin des Tuileries from 10pm to 1am featuring l'Orchestre Claude Bolling and from 9:30pm to 1am at Bastille. For those who weren't up too late dancing the night before, at 10am on July 14, President Chirac leads the official military parade up the Champs-Elysées from Concorde to Etoile, passing 4,000 spectators along the way and culminating with an air show at 11:30am. In the evening, singer and comedian Ticky Holgado performs a live concert in the Jardin des Tuileries at 10pm and a concert and fireworks display enlivens the Jardin du Trocadéro at 10:30pm.

Tour de France 1999. Despite all the dopage...the race must go on! Cyclists take off from Vendée on July 3 and arrive on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées around 3:30pm on July 25. The sideline cheering section is usually as enthusiastic as France's World Cup Soccer fans were last summer. Guided Tours in English. Whether your French isn't up to par or your family's in town, these two hour-long, English language, guided tours of Père Lachaise Cemetery and Le Parc André-Citroën are interesting activities for a Saturday in Paris. Created by a team of architects, the Parc André-Citroën is located along the Seine and is filled with wildflower gardens, fountains and greenhouses. Now home to Jim Morrison, Chopin, Gertrude Stein, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf and 4,150 trees, Père Lachaise Cemetery was created by Napoléon Bonaparte and includes gravestones by famous sculptors. Every Saturday, to Sept, 10:30am, Le Parc André-Citroën, meet on the corner of rue Balard and rue St-Charles (METRO: Balard); 3pm, Père Lachaise Cemetery, meet at the main entrance on bd de Ménilmontant (METRO: Père Lachaise or Philippe-Auguste), tel: 01.40.71.75.60, 37F.

"Les Pestacles." Free music, theater, circus and marionette performances for children are scheduled every Wed at 2:30pm throughout the summer. Highlights include: July 28, "Le Merveilleux Voyage de Jack Agile" to the land of cowboys and Indians; Aug 11, Zephyr Bleu magic show; and Aug 18, "Les clowns Kraven et Matchito." "Festival Classique au Vert." Once again, the Parc Floral de Paris invites Parisians to wind down their weekends with free Sunday afternoon concerts on the grass  and under their new 1,500 seat "Delta." Concert highlights include: July 8, The Krokodiloes (Harvard choir) preceded by folk songs, Scottish songs, jazz, swing Broadway music at 3pm; July 18, Octuor de France, directed by Jean-Louis Sajot performing Tchaikovsky and Mozart; Aug 1, Recoveco, traditional instrumental music from Venezuela and Colombia; Aug 22, Operas, directed by Frederic Ligier, perform Mozart and Pergolesi. "Bals-Concerts". Sunday nights swing on the outdoor dance floor at the Parc de la Villette. Join hundreds of Parisians dancing to music from around the world. "Festival du Cinéma en Plein Air." This 10th annual outdoor film festival kicks off on July 16 with Sergio Leone's 1984 film "Once Upon a Time in America." Summer highlights include: July 22, W.S. Van Dyke's 1932 version of "Tarzan of the Jungle"; Aug 1, Charlie Chaplin's 1921 classic "The Kid"; Aug 10, "2001 Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick (1968); Aug 18, Alain Resnais' 1958 "Hiroshima Mon Amour" based on the novel by Marguerite Dumas; Aug 28, Robert Altman's 1992 "Short Cuts" and the festival closes with Wim Wender's 1975 "Au fils du Temps."
